Studies for data analysis

Advanced Excel skills or access to a data analysis expert are required to gain the full benefit from these diagnostic tools.

Who owns the timeline (WOTTL) study

This study has been designed to help you to identify where and how long the key delays are across the patient journey through the emergency department.

These templates are designed to assist you in collecting and analysing the data from the study. Templates 1 and 2 should be read in conjunction with the overview document.

Why am I still here (WAISH) study

This study has been designed as a snapshot in time to identify bed status and capacity on the wards. It can identify either legitimate medical treatment purposes or other reasons for delays. It is a one-off study that may be used to corroborate the accuracy of the NSW Health Patient Flow Portal's 'Waiting for What' tool (reasons for delays).

The templates are designed to assist you in the collection and analysis of this data.

Standard tool

Mental health tool

The Mental Health Why Am I Still Here? Diagnostic tool (MH WAISH) is a diagnostic tool that will assist to:

  • identify barriers to discharge from inpatient mental health services
  • gain a clearer picture of local system inefficiencies that impede the ability to provide the most optimal care in the right environment at the right time for the patient.

Emergency Department Mental Health Diagnostic (ED MHD)

The ED MHD is an Excel based diagnostic tool that will assist in tracking patient flow and help to gain a clearer picture of the patient journey through the Emergency Department (ED) for those presenting to the ED with a mental health problem.

The tool is particularly useful where the ED and mental health teams do not have reliable activity and timestamp data available through the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and other patient management systems. It is recommended that sites review local data available initially, specifically timestamp data on particular activities. For example, triage, first seen, MH referral, bed request. Please contact the Whole of Health Program team to obtain the ED MHD tool.
