Identifying improvement opportunities

At the beginning of every project is the planning and diagnostics phase. Understanding the current state is vital to ensure you don’t duplicate what has been done in the past and that you take the learning and leverage off it. It is essential to identify and engage with all key stakeholders during this phase.

Some of the main things to discover are:
  • the demand for hospital resources – inpatient beds, emergency department beds/treatment spaces
  • the capacity of hospital and existing capacity constraints
  • understanding where there is a mismatch in demand and capacity
  • identify areas for drilldown analysis
  • build understanding of the underlying issues and quantify the impact
  • identify delays and reasons for delay
  • discover root cause of an issue and adequately prepare solutions
