The Relative Stay Index App has been created for use by hospitals, local health districts (LHDs) and specialty health networks (SHNs).

The tool allows a user to investigate if length of stay in their hospital(s) is higher or lower than would be anticipated based on their patient's clinical conditions and personal characteristics. This is expressed as excess or saved bed days.

RSI is calculated using five years of data to determine an expected length of stay for each individual record. This allows for comparison factoring in before, during and after the pandemic. The model uses several variables to adjust for uncontrollable factors such as

  • Hospital peer groups
  • Casemix (DRG)
  • Age groups and sex
  • Seasons
  • Day of the week
  • Mode of separation (including if a person was transferred to another facility)
  • Emergency vs planned admission
  • A history of COVID
  • Living alone
  • Assisted living
  • Low socioeconomic status (in particular unstable accommodation).

How can it help in our hospitals?

The App enables a better understanding of hospital length of stay challenges and can support diagnostic and investigatory work. The app has abilities to:

  • showcase hospitals across NSW to allow benchmarking with other peer grouped facilities
  • locate where there may be models of care that support shorter lengths of stay
  • help identify where there are successes to celebrate.

How do I request access to the App?

To access the App, please complete the HSP Application and RSI Application User Access Request Form The form should be approved by the Chief Executive or delegate (e.g. Director of Operations or General Manager) of a LHD/SHN.

Once completed and approved please email the form to MOH-WOHP@health.nsw.gov.au

Note that access is not portable. Individuals should submit a new access request if transferring between organisations.

For more information, please contact the WOHP team.
