Direct access colonoscopy

It is projected that by 2021, bowel cancer will account for 12.4% of all cancer diagnoses in NSW.

If found early, 90% of bowel cancer can be treated successfully. The best way to detect bowel cancer at the earliest stage - potentially before cancer has developed - is to do a faecal occult blood test. If the result is positive, most people will require a colonoscopy.

This initiative seeks to:

  • increase the detection of early stage bowel cancer
  • provide timely and direct access to colonoscopy assessment.

This will enhance patient choices, experiences, clinical options and health outcomes during the healthcare journey.
