All of Us is a high-level guide to respectful engagement made by consumers, carers and staff.

There are Six ways of working and a starter pack of tools.

Here is some information about All of Us

  • All of Us is a high-level guide to respectful engagement. We use a website instead of a written document. Written documents go out of date quickly. In our first release, we've included:

All of Us doesn't replace consumer or community engagement frameworks from local health districts or NSW Health agencies.
  • In 2021, a few hundred staff, consumers and carers were involved in working groups based on the enablers of human experience in the Elevating the Human Experience (ETHE) Guide to Action. In the groups, a high-level guide for consumer, carer and community engagement was a priority. This Guide is the result.

  • All of Us is for:

    • NSW Health staff engaging consumers, carers and communities in projects, research, events and committees – or NSW Health staff hiring external facilitators and organisations who do training on consumer, carer and community engagement
    • anyone else leading engagement for NSW Health agencies
    • consumers, carers and communities. We hope you can use Six ways of working and tools to:
      • know what to expect
      • work with health staff to plan projects, events and committees
      • reflect on how you're engaged and what to do better.
  • We want positive and respectful experiences for consumers, carers, communities and staff working together to design, improve or innovate in health. [1][2]3]

In order to: Support engagement activities across NSW Health to have a positive impact and not harm consumers, carers or communities.[4]

We'll do this by: Sharing the Six ways of working  and tools across the system and with staff. And with consumers, carers and communities.

So we can help to: Improve health outcomes and experiences for all of us.[3]

  • All of Us was developed through extensive collaboration, consultation and the review of 35+ existing guides and frameworks. We give special thanks to the Design Crew and Advisory Group of consumers, carers, community and staff who helped us make All of Us.

    Read about the design process.

  • All consumer, carer and community engagement activities led by or on behalf of NSW Health, local health districts and other health agencies. Activities include:

    • Co-design and co-production
    • Service design and clinical redesign
    • Research
    • Facility redevelopment
    • Governance and leadership
    • Committees and working groups
    • Policy, strategy and reform
    • Measurement and evaluation.
    • how to engage specific cultural groups or identities or in specific parts of health – for example, mental health, justice health, LGBTQI+ health
    • why health services should engage with consumers or the benefits (this information has been available for many years)
    • how to deliver services
    • how staff should interact with consumers and carers in clinical care
    • how to do co-design or co-production.
  • We know words are used differently across the health system and across communities. We also know words change, often.

Here are the key terms we use in All of Us.
