Cervical ripening is an essential step in preparation for birth by induction of labour.
A series of clinical incidents were identified during a randomised control trial at John Hunter Hospital. A subsequent audit (July 2018), revealed 44% of women received suboptimal care.
The existing 48-hour cervical ripening protocol was streamlined to a 24-hour process. Through a collaborative approach, a four-bedded assessment bay was established with targeted midwifery care, supported by care pathways to standardise treatment, hence the establishment of the Maternity Assessment Bay framework.
