APHTI traineeships are hosted by NSW health services, which includes local health districts and specialty networks. Around four APHTI traineeships are available each year.

​Eligibility

​To apply for a traineeship, you must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent. Race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised by Section 14 (d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW.

You will also be required to meet the entry requirements for enrolment in a Master of Public Health degree at a university based in NSW. This is typically an undergraduate degree in health or a related field, however some universities have alternative entry pathways for people with substantial and relevant professional experience.

Some health services may also require you to have previous health-related professional experience. This could be clinical experience, or experience in health research, health administration, health management, planning and development of health services, health promotion or other employment within the health system.

Workplace training

You will be employed full-time as an Aboriginal Population Health Trainee by a NSW health service for three years. You will complete work placements in a range of different teams within the health service. You will complete at least three placements during your three-year traineeship.

Within each work placement you will complete a range of projects and activities that enable you to develop knowledge, skills and experience in public health.

Work placements and projects are structured around a competency framework that has been developed specifically for the APHTI. The framework addresses core competencies in the areas of:

  • professional practice
  • population health management and leadership
  • communication
  • consultation and collaboration
  • evidence-informed practice
  • epidemiology and data management
  • communicable diseases and environmental health
  • health promotion
  • health program evaluation and monitoring.

​University study

You will enrol in a Master of Public Health degree at the start of your traineeship and will study part-time throughout your traineeship. This may involve studying online, attending university in person, or a combination of these. You will be able to choose the university you would like to study at.

You will be entitled to one day of paid study leave each week to support your studies. The NSW Ministry of Health will pay for your studies, and you will be required to present your results to the Ministry at the end of each semester. 

​​Support

You will have day-to-day support for your work and study. For each of your work placements you will have a workplace supervisor and you will have an APHTI coordinator who will work with you throughout your traineeship. You will also work closely with the Population Health Training team based at the Ministry of Health​.
