Operative and instrumental births are more common among privately than publicly insured mothers. Among privately insured mothers who gave birth in NSW, the rate of normal vaginal birth decreased from 42.5% in 2018 to 38.6% in 2022 and the caesarean section rate increased from 43.9% to 49.4%. Among publicly insured mothers who gave birth in NSW, the rate of normal vaginal birth decreased from 59.0% in 2018 to 55.4% in 2022 and the caesarean section rate increased from 29.8% to 33.6%.
