Healthy school canteens for healthy kids

Healthy eating supports growing minds and bodies and helps children do their best at school.

School canteens can play an important role in helping kids create healthy habits – for life.

The benefits of having a healthy school canteen

A healthy canteen supports student wellbeing by:

  • providing healthy food and drink options
  • offering fewer foods and drinks that are less healthy
  • encouraging them to drink water
  • reinforcing healthy eating messages taught in the classroom.

The NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy helps make the healthy choice the easy choice.

Support for your school and licensed canteens

All NSW Government schools with a canteen must follow the Healthy School Canteen Strategy. Non-government schools with a canteen are also encouraged to follow it.

Healthy Food Finder is an online tool that canteen staff and volunteers can use to search for packaged foods and drinks to sell in NSW school canteens. For free support and guidance with making your school canteen a healthy one, contact the Healthy Food Information Service.
