Finalist: People and Culture Award

The Mentoring in Midwifery (MiM) Program uses Appreciative Inquiry (AI) principles to connect, educate, and help midwifery students and professionals grow. The program’s main goals are to support the midwifery profession, build leadership at all levels, and retain a strong, confident and skilled midwifery workforce.

The Nursing and Midwifery Office set up a working group of midwifery leaders, students and educators to co-design and launch the MiM program in NSW. The project received ethics approval to both evaluate the experience of midwifery leaders in co-creating the program, and test the pilot in four local health districts (LHDs).

After the pilot, all 15 LHDs with maternity services have adopted the MiM program. Over 2000 midwives and midwifery students are participating in mentoring. Participants highlighted three main benefits of the program: connection, learning, and growth.

The MiM program has been successfully embraced by midwives across NSW Health. Participants feel valued and heard. Being involved in the co-creation of the program provided leadership development for staff that can be applied to other initiatives and roles.
