Vibriosis is caused by infection with bacteria called Vibrio. In Australia, most Vibrio infections occur after eating contaminated seafood or from swimming in contaminated sea waters. Some types of Vibrio bacteria can cause Cholera.
Safe food handling including thorough cooking of shellfish and other seafood, as well as not swimming with an open wound can prevent infection.
