Management of complex clinical needs and challenging behaviour

• WOHP site visits. Clinician expressed need
• patients present with multiple complex comorbidities requiring collaborative models of care
• patients have poor engagement with services and poorer health outcomes
• patients re-present frequently, spend longer in ED and utilise multiple resources including hospital, ambulance and police
• high risk of harm to self or others in an ED environment
• extended ED LOS whilst awaiting stabilisation/resolution of behavioural disturbance
• 75% of patients discharged from the ED within 24-48 hours without requiring admission to Mental Health inpatient services

 Resources and capacity building

• The development of a comprehensive guideline for the management of ASBD patients in the ED from de-escalation techniques to standardised sedation protocols:
  Management of patients with Acute Severe Behavioural Disturbance in Emergency Departments
• Sharing knowledge of successful models and pathways through:
  Management of Complex Acute Severe Behaviourally Disturbed Patients Forum
• Assisting facilities to develop and implement trauma response models and clinical pathways for patients presenting to the ED with ASBD and/or clinical complexities including comorbid acute medical issues and/or intoxication.
