Implementing the Guide for the Management of Nicotine Dependent Inpatients

Summary

This study, Implementing the Guide for the Management of Nicotine Dependent Inpatients, aimed to investigate the efficacy of a 12-month multi-strategic intervention in increasing the delivery of smoking care to nicotine dependent hospital patients. It included regional acute care hospitals with more than 5000 admissions in NSW. Intervention strategies included local consensus and adaptation, linking into existing structures and processes, training, compliance monitoring, prompts and reminders, management support and communication. Smoking care outcome data were collected at baseline and follow-up using patient surveys, medical records audits and health professional surveys. The study was funded by the Health Promotion Demonstration Research Grants Scheme.
