Midwifery is a profession grounded in woman-centred and evidence-based maternal health care for the woman.

A midwife is recognised as accountable professional who works in partnership with women to give support, care and advice during pregnancy, labour and the postpartum period, and for the newborn.

Using the principles of midwifery continuity of care, primary health care and cultural safety, the midwife provides counselling and education, which may include preparation for childbirth and parenthood. The midwife's practice may extend to women's health, reproductive and sexual health, and child and family health care.

Scope of practice

Midwives in NSW Health work to their professional scope of practice, optimising the skills, knowledge and capabilities to provide high quality, safe maternity care. The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Board determine the Midwife Standards for Practice.

The NSW Health Nursing and Midwifery Office provide resources and tools to support midwives to work to the optimal scope of practice.
