In NSW there are two educational pathways to become a midwife. Completing either an undergraduate degree or postgraduate program. Details of current Midwifery Approved Programs of study are published by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
Aboriginal cadetships are available to support Aboriginal midwifery students in fulfilling a dream of giving back to your community. They offer financial support, work placements and mentoring while exposing you to the diverse possibilities of midwifery. They are a chance to focus on your studies, experience the workforce and build relationships.
Eligible registered nurses can access the postgraduate pathway through the NSW Health MidStart recruitment process.
All midwifery students in NSW Health have access to a mentor through the Mentoring in Midwifery initiative for the duration of their studies.
Recruitment for graduate midwives is coordinated annually by the NSW Health Nursing and Midwifery Office. The Local Health Districts recruit to their health facilities through the GradStart process. GradStart offers employment to graduates with initial registration as a midwife.
