NSW Health is encouraging junior doctors to apply for 4,000 positions offered from today through the State’s 2016 recruitment of Junior Medical Officers (JMOs) – the largest campaign of its kind in Australia.

Dr Linda MacPherson, Medical Advisor NSW Health, said the positions ranged from Resident Medical Officers (RMOs) through to Advanced Training and Senior Registrars in a variety of specialties.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for NSW doctors to develop their careers and skills, particularly those who are commencing or continuing their training in a particular specialty in NSW public hospitals,” Dr MacPherson said.

“NSW Health continues to increase the number of JMO positions to meet our staffing requirements and improve patient care.”

NSW Health will establish 60 new medical speciality training positions over the next four years, with 15 of these positions commencing in 2016. The new positions have been established in a number of specialties including psychiatry, palliative care medicine and general medicine in rural and regional locations including Berry, Bathurst, Goulburn, Kempsey, Lismore, Orange, and Wagga Wagga.

“Rural and regional positions provide attractive opportunities for doctors interested in combining a wonderful lifestyle with world class specialist training in a range of clinical settings,” Dr MacPherson said.

“NSW Health is also committed to further developing the Rural Generalist program, establishing 20 positions over the next four years, with the first five of these positions starting in 2016. This program allows general practitioners to gain advanced skills essential to delivering services in rural communities.”

Dr MacPherson said NSW Health had developed a website, Map My Health Career, which provides information about working and training in rural and regional NSW to help junior doctors choose a specialty.

“The Map My Health Career website includes detailed information about 53 subspecialty fields of practice and non-specialist career pathways. It also features interviews with and profiles of specialists and trainees in different fields, and interactive maps of training locations,” she said.

“The website is an invaluable resource for doctors interested in applying for positions during the 2016 campaign.
