Transcript of Lumos for general practitioners
Dr Charlotte Hespe, General Practitioner, Glebe Family Medical Practice: My practice participated in Lumos because I get excited about data. Because I understand that as a GP, I can’t actually improve the health of my entire community unless I understand what the bigger picture looks like.
Dr Jaspreet Saini, General Practitioner, Rosedale Medical Practice: Lumos is a way of us understanding the entire patient journey. It’s an integration between primary care and hospital data, and it allows us a much deeper understanding of what happens to our patients across the healthcare system. Traditionally we’ve been able to understand what happens to our patients as they enter our practice. With Lumos this is the first time we can actually understand what happens as they leave our practice and end up in tertiary care settings.
Dr Charlotte Hespe, General Practitioner, Glebe Family Medical Practice: Although I’m good at seeing a patient’s health needs when they’re seeing me individually, it’s very easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. What am I missing out on? What are the gaps in healthcare services that actually need to be addressed so that I can actually do a better job? And data is what provides that for me.
I’ve been really interested in looking at the renal impairment and diabetes data. And so as part of that we sort of looked at what our diabetes patients look like, what are we doing, can we improve what we’re already offering them, and also understanding the complexity. And I think what we’ve been able to do by reviewing those patients is understanding that we actually have really complex patients who have more than just diabetes and there’s lots of things into play.
Dr Jaspreet Saini, General Practitioner, Rosedale Medical Practice: In essence it’s really easy to use from the perspective of the data appears in a visually attractive form, it’s easy to understand, it’s presented in a way that makes sense to us.
Dr Charlotte Hespe, General Practitioner, Glebe Family Medical Practice: It’s not just a benefit for my practice, it’s actually a benefit for all of NSW by providing an overall view of what is actually happening in general practice.
Dr Jaspreet Saini, General Practitioner, Rosedale Medical Practice: Would I recommend Lumos for other GPs? Absolutely. I think it’s a no brainer. If you’re interested in seeing that your patients have a great experience of care and that their health is actually improving over time, I think you have to invest in something like Lumos. If you’re interested in driving your practice towards team-based care where you’re looking at data-driven improvement as a key building block for your practice, you have to invest in Lumos. And if you’re interested in actually feeling fulfilled at the end of every day, going home feeling as though you’ve got something in the works that’s actually driving great positive outcomes for your patients over time, you have to invest in Lumos.
