Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District
Koori Kids Futures was introduced in 2015 targeting young indigenous local people. It is an adaptation of Health Inspirations which has run in NBMLHD since 2013.
Koori Kids Futures is designed for secondary school students, primarily those in years 10–11, who live or attend school in one of the LHD’s local government areas.
The program offers a facilitated five-day immersion. It gives a clear picture of the world of work and the skills required to make informed decisions about employment in the healthcare sector. Students observe, visit and participate in more than 20 ward or unit-based activities that showcase the clinical and clinical support roles associated with various health careers.
The program complements a broad regional development approach of ‘building our own’ workforce by encouraging local participants to pursue careers as employees at local health services.
The Chief Executive recently showcased the program at the 2019 Stepping Up Forum.
