Genomics and new genomic technology has the potential to transform patient care in the areas of

cancer
rare disease
population health
infectious disease and
microbiome (also known as gut health).

For example, genetic sequencing

allows inherited conditions to be identified with greater ease
enables cancerous tumours and new infectious pathogens to be characterised in detail so that diagnoses can be made accurately and treatment can be tailored to the patient,
broadens the range of pre-conception screening options.

The existing health workforce will take on many new tasks across the patient journey to seize the opportunities that the dynamic field of genomics presents.
