In 2011, NSW Health carried out a review of Models of Care in NSW Emergency Departments (EDs) and the effectiveness of these models for managing demand for services. The review identified challenges faced by EDs in the operation of models, key principles required for effective operation and monitoring measures for ongoing review and quality improvement. The review also aimed to create a standardised suite of models of care to assist hospitals to provide access to timely, safe and quality emergency care.
Based on this review, this Emergency Department Models of Care 2012 document includes ten ED models of care which support the hospital in managing demand for emergency care. Each model has been designed to facilitate the ideal patient journey through ED.
