What is a hepatitis Health Undertaking?

LetterYou have received a letter from NSW Health asking you to have a blood test for hepatitis B or C.

This blood test is needed as it is part of your health visa checks. This is called a Health Undertaking and is required by the Department of Home Affairs.

This test is important because hepatitis is common in some countries but not Australia. Even if you are well you still need a test. Many people with hepatitis B or C have no symptoms, but over time the virus may damage your liver and even cause cancer.

More information on hepatitis B and C can be found here.

By having a test, your doctor can let you know if you have hepatitis B or C and provide you with information and treatment if needed.

What do I need to do?

To complete your health visa check, you must:

  1. Make an appointment with any doctor within one month of receiving the letter from NSW Health.
  2. Take the letters you received with you and show them to your doctorYour doctor will test you for hepatitis B or C and let public health know that you have had your visa health check.
  3. Public health will let the Department of Home Affairs know your Health Undertaking is complete. There is nothing else you need to do.
