You have received a letter from NSW Health asking you to have a blood test for hepatitis B or C.
This blood test is needed as it is part of your health visa checks. This is called a Health Undertaking and is required by the Department of Home Affairs.
This test is important because hepatitis is common in some countries but not Australia. Even if you are well you still need a test. Many people with hepatitis B or C have no symptoms, but over time the virus may damage your liver and even cause cancer.
More information on hepatitis B and C can be found here.
By having a test, your doctor can let you know if you have hepatitis B or C and provide you with information and treatment if needed.
To complete your health visa check, you must:
If you need help to find a doctor, please visit health direct service finder and search for a general practitioner (GP) or call 1800 022 222.
If you need an interpreter, you can call 131 450 or visit the Translating and Interpreting Service website.
If you have any questions about your visa or immigration, please contact the Department of Home Affairs.
