​​The three-year workplace-based training program offers supervised on-the-job learning for people who have completed undergraduate study in statistics and are committed to a career in biostatistics. Trainee Biostatisticians rotate through a series of work placements throughout the NSW health system and undertake a Master of Biostatistics degree part-time through distance learning.

Competency-based learning

The training program addresses core competencies in the areas of:

  • principles of design (application of biostatistical principles to study design)
  • data management and analysis
  • professional practice
  • communication
  • management.

Supervised work placements

The majority of learning is undertaken through project work in supervised work placements. Placements are generally six months in duration and provide a range of supervised population health experiences linked to the program’s competency framework.
 
The work placements provide opportunities to develop biostatistical skills and professional networks, while addressing strategic and operational priorities of the NSW health system.
 
Placements are generally located within the NSW Ministry of Health, however, placements may be offered in other NSW Health entities, such as the Cancer Institute NSW, or NSW-based population health research centres. 
 

Master of Biostatistics

Trainees complete a Master of Biostatistics degree part-time via distance learning through the University of Sydney.
 
The Ministry meets the academic course fees and student services and amenities fees associated with enrolment in the Masters of Biostatistics degree. Trainees must satisfactorily complete the master’s degree, which includes the assessment of a portfolio of evidence based on the program’s competency framework and compiled from their work placements.​
