The role of registered nurses
RNs work with patients and clients in hospitals, the community and residential settings. RNs have a central role in the healthcare team, assessing, planning, providing and evaluating care for people with acute, chronic and complex health conditions.
RNs practice in all clinical specialties and also work in education, management, research and policy roles.
The RN role is fast-paced and requires critical thinking, clear communication, technical skills and empathy.
Start your nursing career
To become an RN you will need to complete a
Bachelor of Nursing at university. Nursing degrees are a mix of theory, simulation lab work, and clinical placements in various settings. Registration to practice as an RN is by application to the
Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
