NSW Healthy Children Initiative: The first five years July 2011 – June 2016

Summary

The NSW Healthy Children Initiative (HCI) was established in 2011 to provide a comprehensive, coordinated approach to childhood obesity prevention across NSW. HCI is funded by the NSW Ministry of Health and delivered through the NSW Office of Preventive Health and Local Health Districts.

HCI delivers evidence-based programs across a range of settings. The structure and delivery of the initiative are unique in terms of the scope, population reach, framework for action and focus on implementation and performance monitoring, notably in response to equity issues. Genuinely reciprocal partnerships across NSW and enhancement of the existing health promotion workforce draws upon the strengths of the NSW Ministry of Health, Local Health Districts and key service delivery partners in mutually beneficial ways.

This report reflects upon the actions and outcomes of the first five years July 2011 – June 2016, and sets directions for the future to achieve the Premier’s Priority target of reducing childhood overweight and obesity by 5 percent by 2025.
