Focusing on delivering better value improves outcomes and experiences at an individual patient level, can improve the effectiveness and efficiency of health services, and uses our resources wisely to support a more sustainable healthcare system.

We can apply value based principles at every level of the health system and in everything we do, to help:

  • manage our health system to meet new challenges and opportunities
  • deliver a financially and environmentally sustainable future
  • use resources to deliver care that aligns with better outcomes and experiences
  • plan, deliver and improve services based around their holistic healthcare needs.

For patients and the community

By improving value,

  • care is better structured around a person's health journey, and delivered more seamlessly across different service providers
  • patients are asked about the outcomes and experiences that matter most to them, and these outcomes and experiences are measured and acted on
  • patients are more empowered to be partners in their own care.

For health services and the broader healthcare system

Using value based principles can reduce fragmentation, allow resources to be used in better ways, and improve financial and environmental sustainability.

Examples include improving pre-operative care to avoid invasive surgery; supporting better recovery; designing health services to improve connectivity between care providers in different settings; and investing in preventative care to improve outcomes and reduce demand for services.

Statewide programs that apply value based healthcare

Examples of NSW Health programs that apply value based healthcare principles to help deliver the outcomes and experiences that matter to patients and the community include:

Value based healthcare can also be applied in non-clinical settings. The paper, Taking a value based commissioning approach to non-clinical and clinical support services, provides examples of non-clinical services where a value lens was applied.
