Overview

​In 2021, 44.8% of neonatal deaths in NSW occurred among periviable infants while 24.2% were associated with congenital anomalies. Of the 223 neonatal deaths in NSW in 2021, 183 (82.1%) were born prematurely. Congenital anomalies accounted for the majority of deaths among babies born at 37-plus weeks gestation (47.5%), followed by neurological conditions (27.5%).
