Vaccination against meningococcal disease caused by groups A, C, W and Y is provided as part of the National Immunisation Program at 1 year of age.
Vaccination against meningococcal disease caused by group B is now provided as part of the National Immunisation Program for Aboriginal infants with doses at 6 weeks, 4 months, and 12 months of age. Some Aboriginal children who have certain at-risk conditions may need an extra dose at 6 months of age. Catch up vaccine is available for Aboriginal children under 2 years of age (dose number is dependent on age at administration).
Note: The meningococcal B vaccine is not included in the assessment of family assistance payments. Children should not be excluded from childcare if the meningococcal B vaccine has not been received.
Meningococcal A, C, W, Y vaccine and meningococcal B vaccine is now provided as part of the National Immunisation Program for people with asplenia, hyposplenia, complement deficiency, and people being treated with eculizumab.
The NSW School Vaccination Program provides free ACWY vaccine to students in year 10 in all NSW secondary schools.
To ensure all older adolescents have the opportunity to protect themselves against meningococcal disease caused by serogroups A, C, W and Y, people aged 15-19 who are not enrolled in school, or miss vaccination at school, can access free vaccine from their GP.
