The Broken Hill community is being given its first look at new designs showcasing the expanded Emergency Department (ED) and new Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit (MHIPU) being delivered at the Broken Hill Health Service.
Health Minister Ryan Park said the community is being encouraged to provide feedback on the new designs, which will provide a first-class and modern facilities for those needing critical care and mental health support.
"We are excited to share the proposed floorplan, as well as an artist’s impression of the new dedicated external entry into the ED, which is being reconfigured in its current location to better meet the needs of the region," Mr Park said.
"The existing ED will undergo a full internal refurbishment and reconfiguration and will be extended into the existing ambulance bay, making it a bigger and more efficient space.
"This means the waiting area will be larger and filled with more natural light. It will also enable tailored treatment spaces for children and those requiring mental health services," Mr Park said.
Minister for Mental Health Rose Jackson said the latest designs for the ED and Acute MHIPU, which form the current Broken Hill Health Service Redevelopment, have been informed by valuable feedback, with more than 25 consultation sessions held with staff, clinicians, carers and the community to date.
"Extensive consultation, including with patients and carers with a lived experience, has been vital in ensuring the new mental health facility meets the needs of the community," Ms Jackson said.
"All bedrooms in the new Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit will be single rooms with dedicated ensuite bathrooms, and access to a large internal communal lounge and dining area. Natural light, fresh air, and Indigenous influenced landscaping will contribute to a therapeutic and culturally safe environment for consumers, visitors and staff.
"The new Unit will also feature a dedicated entry away from the main hospital with a drop off/pick up area, as well as a sensory modulation room, multi-activity space and exercise room."
