Value based healthcare is
the equitable, sustainable and transparent use of the available resources to achieve better outcomes and experiences, for every person at all stages of their health journey.
It involves moving from outputs to outcomes; measuring and acting on what matters most to each person; and structuring care around people rather than service events.
Focusing on delivering better value care means simultaneously considering:
Value based healthcare is widely recognised as best practice for designing and delivering healthcare. It can lead to better outcomes for our community and better value for the system.
Value based healthcare aligns with other NSW Health frameworks and initiatives, such as Virtual Care and Integrated Care, and contributes to achieving the Future Health vision.
One service or mechanism cannot deliver value – we must work together as individuals, across health services, and at a system level to achieve lasting improvements. At each level, this can include asking different questions, including:
Am I providing care that delivers the outcomes and experiences that matter most to the patient?
Are we using available resources optimally to improve outcomes?
Are we allocating resources and creating the environment that enables the best outcomes?
Although value based healthcare is a way of thinking rather than a rigid process, there are eight key enablers that you can use to improve the value that our services and health system deliver.
Engage patients and communities to understand what matters and support their empowerment.
Improve our ability to measure and evaluate the impact our care is making to people and the system.
Support and harness health and medical research and innovation.
Working with a range of providers across settings to deliver care where and how the best outcomes and experiences are achieved.
Achieve a ‘Fit for Purpose’ workforce for now and the future.
Use analytics to better support decision making and technology to transform the way health care is delivered.
Shift the focus from activity to outcomes.
